This document outlines the process for a Commission-approved Bilingual Authorization educator preparation program seeking to add a new language to its program offerings.
Institutions that have already been approved to offer one or more Bilingual Authorization languages may apply to offer a new language by submitting a course matrix and short narrative (2-3 pages maximum) that describes how the institution will prepare their candidates for the Bilingual Authorization in the proposed language.
While existing coursework used within the Bilingual Authorization may also be used for the new language, programs must ensure that candidates meet the Bilingual Teaching Performance Expectations. In the program documents, programs should clarify which coursework is new and which coursework is already in place for other languages in the Bilingual Authorization program. More details on the approval process are described below.
The application request must be submitted to Commission staff for review and approval prior to offering the new language to candidates. All new languages must be approved by the Committee on Accreditation.
- A brief narrative (2-3 pages maximum) covering the following topics:
- A description of how the new language will be offered within the existing program, including:
- New or existing courses that will be used.
- How the 20 hours of fieldwork will be implemented for the new language.
- How candidate language competence will be assessed (CSET or program coursework).
- A description of how the new language will be offered within the existing program, including:
- Course sequence for the new language
- If existing courses will be used, identify which courses are existing and those that will be new.
- Faculty Vitae
- Provide faculty vitae for faculty who will be teaching new courses for the proposed language.
- Course Matrix: Bilingual Authorization Course Matrix
- You may use existing courses and submit the current course matrix, if applicable. If new courses will be added, add those on the course matrix and make clear the BTPEs that will be addressed in existing courses and those that will be addressed in the new courses.
- If it is more appropriate to submit a separate matrix that is acceptable.
