Authorization

The General Education Multiple Subject Limited Assignment Teaching Permit authorizes the holder to teach self-contained classes, such as those generally found in elementary schools.

The General Education Single Subject Limited Assignment Teaching Permit authorizes the holder to teach departmentalized courses within the authorized field or fields named on the document, such as those generally found in the middle and high schools.

Note [1]: The last date to submit an application for the Limited Assignment Permit in one of the Specialized Science content areas was January 1, 2015. The Limited Assignment Permit will no longer be reissued in one of these content areas.

Requirements for the Initial Issuance of the Permit

Individuals must satisfy all of the following requirements:

  1. Be currently employed by the employing agency requesting such assignment.
  2. The employing agency must have an annual Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators (form CL-500) on file with the Commission.
  3. Hold a valid California general education teaching credential based on a baccalaureate degree and a professional preparation program, including student teaching.
  4. Be assigned an experienced educator in each subject area of the limited assignment if the applicant has not obtained permanent status as defined in California Education Code, Section 44929.21 or 44929.22 or 44929.23 in a school district in California within the previous ten years.
  5. Consent to serve on the General Education Multiple or Single Subject Limited Assignment Teaching Permit.
  6. Submit, through the employing agency, a completed application (form 41-4) and application processing fee.

Requirements for Renewal

Individuals must satisfy all of the following requirements:

  1. Be currently employed by the employing agency requesting such assignment.
  2. The employing agency must have an annual Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators (form CL500) on file with the Commission.
  3. Hold a valid California general education teaching credential based on a baccalaureate degree and a professional preparation program, including student teaching.
  4. Satisfy one of the following (coursework or exams must have been completed after the issuance date of the current permit and prior to the requested issuance date):
    1. Complete at least six semester units, or nine quarter units of coursework required for each subject listed on the permit, or
    2. Take all required subject matter examinations for each subject area listed on the permit and pass at least two sections (see Terms and Definitions).
  5. Consent to serve on the Limited Assignment General Education Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Permit.
  6. Submit, through the employing agency, a completed application (form 41-4), required documentation (official transcripts showing coursework passed with grade C or better, or copy of test score results), and application processing fee.

Period of Validity

A General Education Multiple or Single Subject Limited Assignment Teaching Permit is valid for one year and may be reissued twice in any one specific subject.


Terms and Definitions

Experienced Educator

The experienced educator provides assistance and guidance to the permit holder. The experienced educator must have three years of teaching experience within each subject area requested on the permit if the teacher does not hold permanent status. For example, if the permit is requested in English and social science, the experienced educator must have a minimum of three years teaching experience in both English and social science. The local employing agency may assign more than one experienced educator to meet this requirement.

Subject Matter Examinations

To use the subject matter examination option to meet the renewal requirement for the General Education Limited Assignment Permit, the individual must take all required examinations for each subject listed on the permit and pass at least two sections in each subject. Since the number of examination sections required to meet subject matter competence for the Multiple and Single Subject Credentials varies from two to four sections, if one or more sections have been previously passed, the individual must pass the remaining one or two sections, as appropriate. If an individual has not passed any of the three required multiple subject examination sections prior to issuance of the initial limited assignment permit, all three sections must be taken and two sections passed for the first renewal of the permit. The individual must then take and pass the final multiple subject examination section to meet subject matter competence during the second year of the limited assignment permit to obtain an added credential authorization under Title 5 Regulation 80499. Passage of four examinations sections is required to meet the subject-matter competence for a single subject credential in English. If an individual has passed one of the four required sections prior to issuance of a limited assignment permit, the remaining three sections must be taken and two sections passed for the first renewal of the permit. The individual must take and pass the one remaining English examination section to meet subject matter competence during the second year of the limited assignment permit to obtain an added credential authorization under Title 5 Regulation 80499.
