General Information
Institutions of Higher Education (IHE)
IHEs serve two primary functions in preparing individuals for careers in education. They provide training for educators in Commission-approved professional preparation programs, instruction in the methodologies of teaching, and subject-matter preparation programs, verifying competence in the specific subject area(s) to be taught.
IHEs provide programs for multiple and single subject teaching, administration, counseling and other services, special education and specialist teaching areas, and clear credential programs for professional level credentials.
Other Program Sponsors
Other entities such as school districts, County Offices of Education, and others also offer Commission-approved programs. These could be multiple subject, single subject, or education specialist programs, programs in administration, and Induction programs. See the Approved Programs link below for a current list of Commission-approved programs.
Career Technical Education
To encourage teachers in science, technology, engineering, math, (STEM) and career technical education, recent changes in California law have added community-based organizations or nongovernmental organizations, in addition to colleges and universities, to serve as program sponsors. The Professional Services Division (PSD) works closely with Program Sponsors to develop and ensure quality of teacher preparation programs.
