General Information

State regulations require that individuals who serve as supervisors and teachers in State-funded child development programs be authorized by the State to serve in such positions. Child Development Permits issued by the Commission authorize service in child development programs in California.

History

Under prior regulations, the documents authorizing service in child development programs were referred to as Children's Center Permits. Permits issued under those regulations were divided into two categories, instruction and supervision. Children's Center Permits for individuals working in state funded child development programs were issued under six different sets of regulations beginning in 1961. Effective February 1, 1997, the Commission began issuing Child Development Permits instead of Children's Center Permits.

Children's Center Permits are no longer available for initial issuance. However, an individual may convert to a Child Development Permit by submitting an application, fee and supporting documentation verifying his or her qualifications. Regulations stipulate that valid permits for service in a child development program, issued prior to the effective date of February 1, 1997, shall continue in force and may be renewed as prescribed for each specific type of permit at the time it was issued.
