The Commission on Teacher Credentialing issues various types of credentials, certificates, and permits. Many of these documents require renewal on a regular basis. It is the credential holder's responsibility to complete the requirements for the renewal of their document. The renewal code(s) and renewal requirement(s) for each credential, certificate, and permit were printed on the face of the document until September 1, 2008. Since that date, all documents issued by the Commission are available only in a view and print format, available on the Commission's website.

This one-year preliminary credential may be renewed for the remainder of the five-year preliminary time period provided by law upon the completion of either a two-semester hour course or an examination covering the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution. Before the end of the five-year preliminary time period, the holder of this credential must also receive a recommendation from an approved Local Education Agency and must complete the following requirements: a minimum of two years of successful full-time teaching experience as authorized by this credential, nine semester units or 135 clock hours in an approved program of personalized preparation, and the health education unit.
