The Commission on Teacher Credentialing issues various types of credentials, certificates, and permits. Many of these documents require renewal on a regular basis. It is the credential holder's responsibility to complete the requirements for the renewal of their document. The renewal code(s) and renewal requirement(s) for each credential, certificate, and permit were printed on the face of the document until September 1, 2008. Since that date, all documents issued by the Commission are available only in a view and print format, available on the Commission's website.
Here are some examples of where the renewal code can be found on your credential if it was issued prior to September 1, 2008:

Regardless of the expiration date, this credential expires with the State Board of Education Waiver if the holder does not pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). If the holder passes CBEST, he or she may substitute until the expiration date. To continue to serve as a substitute teacher after this credential expires, the holder must verify completion of a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university; must apply through the school district or county office of education where he or she is employed or is seeking employment; and must include the CBEST Verification Transcript with the application.
