The Commission on Teacher Credentialing convened its first meeting Sept. 19-20, 2024, of the Workgroup to Review the Design and Implementation of the Teaching Performance Assessment (RDI-TPA) in response to legislation.

Introduced in February 2024, Senate Bill 1263 originally would have repealed the requirements relating to TPAs and the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA). In mid-June, the bill was amended in accordance with the Commission's recommendations and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sept. 29, 2024.

During the first meeting, Commission Executive Director Mary Vixie Sandy thanked the recently appointed RDI-TPA Workgroup members that include classroom teachers, teacher educators, and performance assessment experts.

“Our work is only as good as our connection is to the people who are doing the work in the classroom and preparing teachers for the classroom,” Executive Director Sandy said. “We are always seeking to be informed by that critical community of practice, so thank you for saying yes to serve on this important workgroup.”

The workgroup’s objective is to ensure that the assessments are valid, authentic, formative in nature, embedded in preparation, and contribute to program improvement through the accreditation system.

An aggressive timeline is in place for the workgroup to consider required topics, develop initial recommendations for the February 2025 Commission meeting, and return final recommendations for action during the June 2025 meeting.
