AB 872 Signed by Governor Brown
Governor Brown has signed AB 872, a bill sponsored by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, which strengthens the Commission’s authority to safeguard students. This bill links the Education code to the Sex Offender Registration Act, ensuring that the Commission will continue to have up-to-date authority to protect students in the future.

Commission Awards Grant Funding To Ease Teacher Shortage
The Commission on Teacher Credentialing has announced the award recipients in three separate grant programs funded as part of the 2016-17 California Budget Act. These grant programs are designed to help address California's current teacher shortage by funding a teacher recruitment center, helping to create new undergraduate programs leading to a credential, and supporting classified school employees pursuing a credential.

Commission on Teacher Credentialing Re-Elects Chair and Vice-Chair for 2016 and Adopts New Teacher Preparation Standards at December Meeting
At its December meeting, the Commission on Teacher Credentialing re-elected Linda Darling Hammond and Kathleen Harris to lead the Commission in 2016. The Commission also adopted new Teacher Preparation Program Standards, the culmination of a yearlong effort to ensure that all general education teachers are well-prepared to teach all student populations.

Governor Brown Signs Bill to Allow Credentialing of Native American Cultural Educators
Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill into law that extends the successfully implemented separate teaching credential for Native American languages passed in 2008 to include Native American culture.

Commission's Accrediting Committee Elects New Co-Chairs for 2015-16
The Commission on Teacher Credentialing's Committee on Accreditation has elected two experienced California educators to lead the COA in 2015-16. The new co-Chairs are Dr. Pia Wong, a professor at CSU, Sacramento; and Dr. Anna Moore, an administrator with the Sonoma County Office of Education.
