The Out-of-State Credential Ladder Graphic shows the steps that a teacher from another state can take to obtain a California teaching credential.
- Out-of-state license. The first step is for the educator to apply to transfer their credential to California.
- Preliminary credential. After applying, the second step is for the educator to be issued their Preliminary credential, which is valid for 5 years. During this time, they must complete their requirement(s) in order to clear their credential.
- Clear credential. After completing their requirements, the third and final step is for the educator to be issued their Clear credential, which is valid for 5 years and renewable.
