The California-Prepared Credential Ladder Graphic shows the steps that an aspiring educator can take to obtain a California teaching credential.

  1. Emergency Permit: Emergency permits are valid for only one school or calendar year. During that time, the educator must complete requirements to move to the Intern credential or Preliminary credential level.

  2. Intern Credential: The intern credential is valid for two to three years. During that time, the educator must complete program requirements to earn their Preliminary credential.

  3. Preliminary Credential: The Preliminary credential is valid for 5 years. During that time, the educator must complete requirement(s) in order to clear their credential.

  4. Clear Credential: The Clear credential is valid for 5 years and is renewable.
