The California-Prepared Credential Ladder Graphic shows the steps that an aspiring educator can take to obtain a California teaching credential.
- Emergency Permit: Emergency permits are valid for only one school or calendar year. During that time, the educator must complete requirements to move to the Intern credential or Preliminary credential level.
- Intern Credential: The intern credential is valid for two to three years. During that time, the educator must complete program requirements to earn their Preliminary credential.
- Preliminary Credential: The Preliminary credential is valid for 5 years. During that time, the educator must complete requirement(s) in order to clear their credential.
- Clear Credential: The Clear credential is valid for 5 years and is renewable.
