California issues four types of emergency substitute permits: 1) 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit, 2) Substitute Teaching Permit for Prospective Teachers, 3) Career Substitute Teaching Permit, and 4) Designated Subjects Career Technical Education 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit. Each emergency substitute permit has its own set of issuance requirements, and each authorizing the holder to serve different day-to-day substituting in any classroom, including preschool, kindergarten, grades 1-12 inclusive or in class organized primarily for adults, and technical, trade or vocational education. This page provides information on substitute permits issued in the last five years. The Commission uses fiscal year starting July 1 to June 30 to report the number of permits issued. New Substitute Permits Issued in the Last Five Years
Data below display the number of new substitute permits issued in the last five year. Permits are valid for one year after initial issuance.

Renewed Substitute Permits Issued in the Last Five Years
Data below display the number of renewed substitute permits issued in the last five years. The 30-Day Substitute Teaching may be continuously renewed each year after its initial issuance. The Substitute Teaching Permit for Prospective Teachers may be renewed once upon completion of at least 15 semester units of coursework. The Career Substitute Teaching Permit and Designated Subjects Career Technical Education 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit can be issued twice but may be continuously renewed annually after each issuance.
