Administrative Services and APA

Information on Administrative Services Credential programs which prepare individuals holding prerequisite credentials to serve as education administrators, including school site principals, vice principals, district level administrators, and other roles requiring this credential. There are two levels to the Administrative Credential that are required, the Preliminary and the Clear.

Career Technical Education (CTE)

Information on the Designated Subjects: Career Technical Education (CTE) credential programs which prepare candidates for teaching in CTE designated courses in grades twelve and below and in classes organized primarily for adults in career technical, trade, or vocational courses. Candidates must have specified industry experience and complete all credential requirements.

Child Development Permit

Information on the Child Development Permit for individuals interested in teaching the state’s youngest learners. This page also includes information on the PK-3 ECE Specialist Instruction Credential. 

English Learner Authorization

Information on the variety of ways that individuals can earn the appropriate authorization to teach English Learners. California requires that every teacher who provides instruction to English Learners be prepared and authorized for such services.

Intern Pathway

Information about the teacher intern pathway. Teacher Intern candidates serve as the teacher of record and are employees of a school district while also completing a program to earn a preliminary credential.

Literacy and Reading Instruction

Information on the requirements in statute and Commission policy with respect to effective literacy instruction that teacher preparation programs must include in their curriculum and clinical experiences to ensure that all teachers are sufficiently prepared to teach literacy. These pages also include information on the Reading and Literacy Added Authorization and Reading Leadership Specialist credential which can be added to a prerequisite teaching credential.

PK-3 ECE Specialist Instruction

Information on the PK-3 Early Childhood Education Specialist Instruction programs that prepare individuals to teach in state operated preschools, transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1-3. While these programs share some features with Multiple Subject credential programs, the focus is on children and students ages 3 to 8.

Preliminary Multiple Subject and Single Subject

Information on the Multiple Subjects teaching credential programs and the Single Subject teaching credential programs. Multiple Subject teachers may teach in self-contained TK-12 classrooms such as those in elementary school classrooms. Single Subject teachers may teach departmentalized classes, such as those in most middle schools and high schools, in grades preschool, K–12, or in classes organized primarily for adults.

Pupil Personnel Services

Information about Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential programs. PPS credential programs prepare professionals who provide a wide range of critical supports for students in the public schools which include school counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, and child welfare and attendance providers.

Special Education

Information about programs that prepare individuals to serve students with disabilities. These programs include the Preliminary Education Specialist: Mild to Moderate Support Needs, Extensive Support Needs, Early Childhood Special Education, Visual Impairments, and Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Also included are Speech Language Pathology, Orientation and Mobility, and Audiology programs.

Teacher Induction

Information about the second tier of the two-tiered teacher credentialing system. Induction is a two-year, job-embedded system of mentoring and support for candidates who have completed a preliminary program of preparation and have entered the teaching profession. They are designed to help new teachers navigate their first years of teaching in California public schools and, upon completion, result in the Clear teaching credential.

Teacher Librarian

Information for programs that prepare teachers to earn the teacher librarian credential. Teacher librarians may plan and coordinate school library programs.
