Student Teacher Stipend Program

Beginning in 2026-27, an annual stipend program to support prospective educators during completion of 500 or more hours of student teaching as part of the credential program’s clinical practice. Stipends of $10,000 each for student teachers paid by the local education agency where the student teacher engages in clinical practice. There is no matching funds requirement and there is no service requirement for participants.

Teacher Residency

Expands, strengthens, improves access to, or creates teacher residency programs that support either of the following: (a) designated shortage fields including special education, bilingual education, computer science, science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), transitional kindergarten (TK), or kindergarten and/or (b) local efforts to recruit, develop support systems for, provide outreach and communication strategies to, and retain a diverse teacher workforce that reflects a local education agency community’s diversity. Legislation authorized both capacity and implementation/expansion grants. For implementation/ expansion grants, eligible local education agencies may receive up to $40,000 per participant with a guaranteed resident compensation package of no less than $20,000, and LEA grantees are required to provide matching funds at a rate of 80 percent of the first $25,000 per participant awarded. Participants must fulfill a service requirement.

School Counselor Residency

Establishes school counselor residency programs that support local efforts to recruit, develop support systems for, provide outreach and communication strategies to, and retain a diverse school counseling workforce that reflects a local educational agency community’s diversity. Legislation authorized both capacity grants—at $250,000 per grantee–and implementation/expansion grants. For implementation/expansion grants, eligible local education agencies may receive up to $40,000 per resident with a guaranteed resident compensation package of no less than $20,000 and LEA grantees are required to provide matching funds at a rate of 80 percent of the first $25,000 per participant awarded. Participants must fulfill a service requirement.

Statewide Residency Technical Assistance Center

Advise and support residency program leaders in a large and widely diverse field of best practices, minimizing costs to program participants, developing sustainability plans, and disseminating information. The awarded grantee, Santa Clara County Office of Education, received $20 million.

Classified School Employee Teacher Credentialing

Recruits classified school employees into teaching careers in STEM, special education, bilingual education, and transitional kindergarten. Grant funds provide financial assistance for degree and credentialing-related expenses (e.g. tuition, fees, books, and exam fees), academic guidance, and other forms of individualized support. Eligible local education agencies may receive up to $4800 per participant per year for a maximum of four years. No matching funds are required. Participants must fulfill a one-year service requirement.

Integrated Undergraduate Teacher Preparation

Supports planning, development, or expansion of four-year integrated programs of professional preparation that produce teachers in special education, bilingual education, science, health, computer science, technology, engineering, mathematics, transitional kindergarten, or kindergarten and/or that partner with a California community college to create an integrated program of professional preparation. Eligible institutions of higher education could have received up to $500,000 per teacher preparation program to implement or $250,000 for planning.

Diverse Education Leaders Pipeline Initiative

Prepare, place, and retain diverse and culturally responsive administrators to improve pupil outcomes and meet the needs of California’s education workforce. Eligible local education agencies received up to $30,000 per participant. No matching funds are required. Participants receiving the grant must fulfill a service requirement after receiving grant funds.

Computer Science Supplementary Authorization Incentive

Supports credentialed teachers in adding a supplementary authorization in computer science. Eligible local education agencies may receive up to $2500 per participant and are required to provide matching funds equal to the grant award. There is no service requirement for participants.

Mathematics Instruction Added Authorization and Reading and Literacy Supplementary Authorization Incentive

Supports credentialed teachers in adding a Mathematics Instructional Added Authorization (MIAA), Mathematics Instructional Leadership Specialist (MILS), Supplementary Authorization in Introductory Mathematics (SAIM), Reading and Literacy Added Authorization (RLAA), or a Reading and Literacy Leadership Specialist (RLLA) credential through a Commission-approved program. Eligible local education agencies may receive up to $6000 per participant and are required to provide a one third amount of matching funds. There is no service requirement for participants.
