Question: Is it an online or a credit recovery course?

If Credit Recovery: Is it offered as part of an alternative education program taught in person?

  • YES: Any fully credentialed teacher may serve in this assignment under Education Code section 44865.
  • NO: Is it offered as an in-person subject-specific class designed for students who need to retake it?
    • YES: Teacher must hold a credential in the specific subject area being taught.

If Online: Is there a sit-site teacher providing instruction in a virtual classroom?

  • YES: Off-site teacher must hold the appropriate California Credential. Certification from another state is not sufficient. Classified staff can serve as the supervising adult on campus during the virtual instruction time, and should not be reported in CALPADS as the teacher of record. (Report in CALPADS with Online Course Instruction Type Code: 1–Instructor Led).
  • NO: Is there a teacher who serves as a facilitator and provides support and/or re-teaching?
    • YES: Any fully credentialed teacher can be authorized as the teacher of record under Title 5 section 80005(b). (Report in CALPADS with Online Course Instruction Type Code: 2–Facilitated)
    • NO: Is this a software-based course in which students set their own pace and course of study?
      • YES: If there are no student records/attendance or grades associated with the course, it may be proctored by a supervised classified employee. If there are grades associated with the course, Title 5 section 80005(b) may be utilized. (Report in CALPADS with Online Course Instruction Type Code: 3–Learner Led)
