Specialist Credential in Reading and Language Arts
The Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential authorizes the holder to provide the following services as a reading specialist in any grade level K-12, or in classes organized for adults:
- Assist and support the classroom teacher in reading instruction and teaching strategies
- Select and adapt reading instruction materials; plan and conduct reading staff development
- Assess student progress and monitor student achievement in reading
- Provide direct reading intervention work with students
- Develop and coordinate reading programs at the school, district, or county level

Out-of-State Prepared Candidates

Out-of-Country Prepared Candidates

The requirements for individuals prepared outside of the U.S. may be found on Commission leaflet Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential. If you do not meet the criteria for out-of-state prepared applicants, you will need to contact a California college or university with a Commission-approved professional preparation program, securing their formal recommendation for the credential.
