The Substitute Teaching Permits Graphic shows the four permit options that authorize substitute teaching. Two of these permits are for day-to-day substituting, and the other two are for longer-term assignments.

Day-to-day options:

  • Emergency Substitute Teaching Permit for Prospective Teachers: This permit is for those who want to substitute prior to earning a bachelor's degree.

  • Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit: This permit is the most common permit used for substituting.

Longer-term assignment options:

  • Emergency Career Substitute Permit: For this permit, employer sponsorship and three consecutive years of substitute teaching are needed.

  • Teaching Permit for Statutory Leave: This permit is for covering a classroom during a teacher's leave of absence.
