Verifying Subject-Mater Competence By Examination
For Multiple Subject Teaching Credentials

Individuals may verify subject-matter competence for a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential by passing all portions of the appropriate Commission-approved subject matter examination(s). It is the individual’s responsibility to take the appropriate examination(s) and to contact the Commission when questions arise.

Individuals may verify subject-matter competence by passing all portions of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET), administered by Evaluation Systems, Pearson. Passing exam scores must be used for certification purposes within ten years of the passing test date. This timeframe applies to each subtest score independently. The ten-year limit does not apply to exam scores that have previously been used for certification purposes.

Information about CSET

Multiple Subjects Plus Writing Skills Examination

In 2007, the CSET: Writing Skills examination (test #142) was added to the group of Multiple Subjects Examinations. Candidates who pass all 3 subtests of the CSET: Multiple Subjects Examination can use passage of the Writing Skills examination to meet the basic skills requirement (BSR) rather than having to pass all sections of the separate CBEST exam. Passing exam scores used to meet the BSR only remain valid indefinitely. See CTC Exams for more information.
