Checklist for Clear Teaching Credential Holders Who Are Applying for Another Clear Teaching Credential

Applying for:

Another kind of Clear teaching credential. You already have a Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, Clear PK-3 Early Childhood Education (ECE) Specialist Instruction Credential, or Clear Single Subject Teaching Credential and are now applying for a Clear Education Specialist Instruction Credential, or you already have a Clear Education Specialist Instruction Credential and are now applying for a Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, Clear PK-3 Early Childhood Education (ECE) Specialist Instruction Credential, or Clear Single Subject Teaching Credential.

Allows you to:

Obtain a new kind of Clear teaching credential based on already holding a Clear teaching credential.

Before You Apply

You will need to obtain your fingerprint clearance specifically for the Commission. If you already have valid fingerprints on file with the Commission, it is not necessary to fingerprint each time you apply for a credential or permit. However, if your fingerprints are expired then you must re-establish fingerprints. Details on how to check your fingerprint status can be found at Check Application Status.

The online application will require you to answer questions related to your professional fitness. Please review How to Complete the CTC Online Professional Fitness Questions before completing the application. If you must answer "yes" to any of the professional fitness questions, please gather all documentation, including any required police reports, certified court records, and miscellaneous documents related to the incident and have them ready to upload as attachments along with the materials for verifying academic requirements listed below. If any of the records have been purged or are otherwise not available, provide an original statement from the agency on its official letterhead verifying that fact.

Ready to Apply?

The items below are required for this application. The Commission reserves the right to request the original(s) of any supporting documentation by mail to ensure authenticity.

A Clear teaching credential
  • You must have one of the following teaching credentials issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and it MUST be Clear level:
    • Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
    • Single Subject Teaching Credential
    • Education Specialist Instruction Credential

NOTE: It is not necessary to attach anything as proof, since the Commission will already have this information if you were issued a document satisfying this requirement.

Verification of one of the following two options:

Option 1: Recommendation form for the program you completed.

  • If you completed a Multiple Subject or Single Subject Teaching Credential program:

    • Upload the 41-REC form, completed and signed by your Commission-approved credential program.
    • NOTE: The representative signing the form must be an authorized submitter who has been approved to submit recommendations for credentials on behalf of the program.
  • If you completed an Education Specialist Instruction Credential program:

     

    • Upload the 41-SPED form, completed and signed by your Commission-approved credential.
    • NOTE: The representative signing the form must be an authorized submitter who has been approved to submit recommendations for credentials on behalf of the program.

Option 2: Out-of-state teaching credential in the new credential subject you want to obtain.

  • Scanned copy, image, or screenshot of your full, professional-level teaching license from another state showing a comparable teaching authorization to the California credential requested.

     

    • If you only have Middle School grades on your out-of-state license, you may apply for either a Multiple Subject or Single Subject credential, but not both.
    • If your out-of-state license is issued in “Special Education” or in a specialty area that does not align with a California specialty area, you may be issued a California Preliminary credential based on completion of an out-of-state generic program in one of the following specialty areas: Mild to Moderate Support Needs, Extensive Support Needs, or Early Childhood Special Education.
