The Commission on Teacher Credentialing continues to make significant steps toward California’s efforts to change how reading is taught and to ensure that teacher candidates can demonstrate high-quality literacy instruction.

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing recently completed a three-year statewide partnership known as UPLIFT CA to support Governor Gavin Newsom’s Master Plan for Early Learning and Care.

The State Collaborative for California’s Educator Workforce in conjunction with the Commission has developed new resources to make high-quality teacher preparation programs more accessible to prospective teacher candidates and teacher preparation program providers.

On May 2, 2024, the Commission’s Committee on Accreditation approved the first teacher preparation programs to offer the PK-3 Early Childhood Education Specialist Instruction Credential. These include San Diego County Office of Education, Cal State Fresno, and San Jose State University.

The first-of-its-kind Clear School Nurse Services Credential program offered by a local education agency was approved during the April 2024 Committee on Accreditation meeting.

A well-prepared early childhood workforce is essential for high quality preschool programs and improved outcomes for young children.

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved revised California Standards for the Teaching Profession that provide educators with a set of knowledge, skills, and abilities intended to equitably benefit the academic achievement and well-being of all students.
