What does a 30 Day Substitute Permit authorize me to teach?
The Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit authorizes the holder to serve as a day-to-day substitute teacher in any classroom, in grades preschool and kindergarten through12. The holder may serve as a substitute for no more than 30 days for any one teacher during the school year, except in a special education classroom, where the holder may serve for no more than 20 days for any one teacher during the school year. Substitute teaching permits may not be used for "service" assignments such as counseling, library, and school nurse.
What does an Emergency Substitute Teaching Permit for Prospective Teachers authorize me to teach?
The Emergency Substitute Teaching Permit for Prospective Teachers authorizes the holder to serve as a day-to-day substitute teacher in any classroom, in grades preschool and kindergarten through 12. The holder may serve as a substitute for no more than 30 days for any one teacher and may only serve for a maximum of 90 days during the school year. In a special education classroom the holder may serve for no more than 20 days for any one teacher during the school year. The permit is valid for one year and may be renewed only once.
What does an Emergency Career Substitute Teaching Permit authorize me to teach?
The Emergency Career Substitute Permit authorizes the holder to serve as a day-to-day substitute teacher in any classroom, in preschool and kindergarten through 12. The holder may serve as a substitute for no more than 60 days for any one teacher during the school year. The holder may serve for only 20 days in a special education classroom. The permit is valid for one year and is renewable.
What does a long-term emergency permit authorize a person to teach?
EMERGENCY CROSSCULTURAL, LANGUAGE AND ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT (CLAD) PERMIT
This certificate, when held in conjunction with a prerequisite credential or permit specified in Education Code Section 44253.3 authorizes the holder to provide the following services to limited-English-proficient pupils: (1) instruction for English language development in grades twelve and below, including preschool, and in classes organized primarily for adults, except when the prerequisite credential or permit is a designated subjects adult education teaching credential, a children's center instructional permit, or a children's center supervision permit, in which case instruction for English language development is limited to the programs authorized by that credential or permit; and (2) specially designed content instruction delivered English in the subjects and at the levels authorized by the prerequisite credential or permit. Education Code Section 44253.3 includes all credentials and permits that authorize instruction except emergency credentials or permits, college or university internship credentials, District Internship Certificates, Exchange Certificated Employee Teaching Credentials, or Sojourn Certificated Employee Teaching Credentials.
EMERGENCY BILINGUAL, CROSSCULTURAL, LANGUAGE AND ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT (BCLAD) PERMIT
This certificate, when held in conjunction with a prerequisite credential or permit specified in Education Code 44253.4, authorizes the holder to provide the following services to limited-English-proficient pupils: (1) instruction for English language development, and instruction for primary language development in the language of emphasis indicated above, in grades twelve and below, including preschool, and in classes organized primarily for adults, except when the prerequisite credential or permit is a designated subjects adult education teaching credential, a children's center instructional permit, or a children's center supervision permit, in which case instruction for English language development and primary language development is limited to the programs authorized by that credential or permit; (2) specially designed content instruction delivered in English in the subjects and at the levels authorized by the prerequisite credential or permit; and (3) content instruction delivered in the language of emphasis indicated above in the subjects and at the levels authorized by the prerequisite credential or permit. Education Code Section 44253.3 includes all credentials and permits that authorize instruction except emergency credentials or permits, college or university internship credentials, District Internship Certificates, Exchange Certificated Employee Teaching Credentials, or Sojourn Certificated Employee Teaching Credentials.
EMERGENCY RESOURCE SPECIALIST PERMIT
The Emergency Resource Specialist Permit authorizes the following:
- instruction and services to pupils whose needs have been identified in an individualized education program developed by the individualized education program team and who are assigned to regular classroom teachers for a majority of a school day
- information and assistance to individuals with exceptional needs and their parents
- consultation, resource information, and material regarding individuals with exceptional needs to their parents and to regular staff members
- special education services with the regular school programs for each individual with exceptional needs enrolled in the resource specialist program
- monitor pupil progress on a regular basis, participate in the review and revision of individualized education programs, as appropriate, and refer pupils who do not demonstrate appropriate progress to the individualized education program team
- emphasize, at the secondary school level, academic achievement, career and vocational development, and preparation for adult life.
EMERGENCY LIBRARY MEDIA TEACHER SERVICES PERMIT
The Emergency Library Media Teacher Services Permit authorizes the following:
- instruct pupils in the choice and use of library materials
- plan and coordinate school library programs with the instructional programs of a school district
- select materials for school and district libraries
- coordinate or supervise library programs at the school, district or county level
- plan and conduct a course of instruction for those pupils who assist in the operation of school libraries
- supervise classified personnel assigned school library duties
- develop procedures for and management of the school and district libraries.
How long can I teach on a 30 Day Substitute Permit?
You may not serve longer than 30 days for any one teacher during the school year. The 30 days does not have to be consecutive but cannot exceed 30 days for any one teacher. In a special education classroom, you may serve for no more than 20 days for any one teacher during the school year.
Can I serve as a day-to-day substitute on a credential other than a 30 Day Substitute Permit?
Yes. Fully credentialed teachers (based on a bachelor's degree, teacher preparation program, and student teaching) may substitute for more than 30 days for any one teacher so long as he/she is serving in the subject area(s) authorized by their credential. However, they may not substitute outside the authorized area for more than 30 days for any one teacher.
Can I work as a day-to-day substitute while holding only a long-term emergency permit?
