Administrative Services Credentials

BASED UPON PASSAGE OF THE SCHOOL LEADERS LICENSURE ASSESSMENT (SLLA)

CALIFORNIA TRAINED - SLLA
To obtain the preliminary credential, you must satisfy all of the following requirements:

  1. Possess one of the following:

  1. A valid California teaching credential

  2. A valid California Designated Subjects Teaching Credential provided you also possess a baccalaureate degree

  3. A valid California services credential in Pupil Personnel Services, Health Services, Library Media Teacher Services, or Clinical or Rehabilitative Services requiring a baccalaureate degree and a program of professional preparation, including field practice or the equivalent

  1. Achieve a passing score of 173 on the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) examination administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS).

  2. Satisfy the basic skills requirement. See Commission leaflet CL-667, entitled Basic Skills Requirement [PDF], for additional information. Individuals who completed their professional preparation program outside of California may contact their California employer about the possibility of obtaining a One-Year Nonrenewable (OYNR) credential pending the basic skills requirement.

  3. Complete a minimum of three years of successful, full-time experience in public schools or private schools of equivalent status (This experience may be teaching, pupil personnel work, librarianship, health services, or clinical or rehabilitative services. "Full-time service" means service for at least a minimum day for three-fourths of the total days in the school year. Substitute or part-time service does not apply.)

  4. Verify employment in an administrative position. [PDF] (If you have completed requirements 1-4 above but do not have an offer of employment in an administrative position, you may apply for a Certificate of Eligibility which verifies completion of all requirements for the preliminary credential and authorizes you to seek employment as an administrator.)

  5. Submit a completed application [PDF]

OUT-OF-STATE TRAINED - SLLA
To obtain the preliminary credential, you must satisfy all of the following:

  1. Submit official transcripts showing a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education

  2. Satisfy the basic skills requirement. See Commission leaflet CL-667, entitled Basic Skills Requirement [PDF], for additional information. Individuals who completed their professional preparation program outside of California may contact their California employer about the possibility of obtaining a One-Year Nonrenewable (OYNR) credential pending the basic skills requirement.

  3. Submit official transcripts showing completion of a professional preparation program at a regionally-accredited institution of higher education, which resulted in the issuance of one of the following:

  1. An elementary, secondary or special education credential (You will not be required to obtain a California teaching credential.)

  2. A Pupil Personnel, Health, Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential, or Designated Subjects Teaching Credential, and a baccalaureate degree (You will be required to obtain and possess a valid equivalent California credential issued by the Commission.)

  1. Complete three years of full-time experience on the appropriate document listed in #3, a or b, above

  2. Achieve a passing score of 173 on the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) examination administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS)

  3. Submit a completed application [PDF], and, if not previously submitted to the Commission, a completed Livescan receipt [PDF]. Out-of-state residents (with out-of-state addresses) have the option of submitting two fingerprint cards in lieu of a LiveScan receipt. If submitting fingerprint cards, fingerprint processing fees must accompany the application packet in addition to the application processing fee [PDF] . Fingerprint cards may be ordered by sending an e-mail to credentials@ctc.ca.gov. This e-mail address is for ordering materials only. Credential questions sent to this e-mail address will not be answered.
