How do I renew my Preliminary Level I Education Specialist Instruction Teaching Credential?

Whether you were trained in California or out-of-state, you must complete the requirements for the Level II professional clear credential before the expiration date of your Level I preliminary credential. Your specific requirements will be found on the face of your credential document. The Level I preliminary credential is not renewable online. Once you have completed your requirements, submit all of the following to the Commission office:

  1. A completed Renewal and Reissuance Application [PDF]

  2. Any required documentation such as official transcripts, recommendation forms, and letters of experience

  3. Application processing fee [PDF]

NOTE: Depending on the requirements listed on your document, you may be required to file your application through your recommending institution of higher education or employing agency.

If you are teaching when your credential expires and have not completed your requirements, contact your employer about the possibility of requesting an appeal to cover your service until you can complete the remaining requirements.

Appeals
If you are unable to complete your requirements for good cause, you may submit an application for appeal directly to the Commission office. This process is explained, and good cause is defined, in the following leaflet: Staff Appeals For Extending The Term Of A Credential [PDF] .
