FAQ - Appeals
I am required to complete an induction program to clear my preliminary credential but am not currently employed. If it is not cleared at the end of its five year term, will I lose my credential? Will I have to go back to school?
Once the requirements to obtain the preliminary credential have been completed and the document issued, there is no need for these to be repeated. The preliminary credential is valid for five years. If the requirements for the clear credential have not been completed by the end of the five year preliminary term, the credential will not be valid for employment until these requirements have been fulfilled or until the preliminary is extended on an appeal basis.
Beginning August 30, 2004, individuals issued Preliminary SB 2042 Single Subject or Multiple Subject Teaching Credentials (renewal code = R14I) must complete a Commission-approved professional teacher induction program in order to obtain the clear teaching credential. If the employing agency verifies that an approved induction program is unavailable, the clear credential candidate may complete a Commission-approved SB 2042 clear credential teacher preparation program (previously a fifth year program) through a California college or university. Individuals employed in private schools or other teaching positions may be eligible for enrollment in an approved clear credential program.
The employing agency may only have the holder of a preliminary SB 2042 teaching credential issued on or after August 30, 2004 apply to an institution on this basis when an induction program is not available. Funding, employment, and other factors are not options that apply to this provision.
Individuals may qualify for extensions of 2 or 3 years if they earned SB 2042 credentials on or after August 30, 2004 and their current situation will not allow them to complete induction by the end of their credential term.
For individuals who obtained their California preliminary teaching credentials before August 30, 2004, or based on completion of a teaching program outside of California, one-year extensions on an appeal basis may still be obtained if necessary.
